Riverdale is generally considered one of the most manageable road test sites in the city. Here’s what makes it different — and the one challenge that catches students off guard.
The Bronx’s overall road test failure rate was 42% in 2024, according to DMV data reported by Gothamist — actually better than the citywide average of 48% and significantly better than Brooklyn (56%) or Queens (57%). The Riverdale test site contributes to that better-than-average number because it sits in one of the Bronx’s quietest, most residential neighborhoods.
The area
Riverdale is the northwesternmost neighborhood in the Bronx, bordering Yonkers and the Hudson River. It looks and feels more like Westchester than the rest of the Bronx — tree-lined streets, detached houses, lower traffic density, and a distinctly suburban atmosphere. If you’ve only ever driven in denser parts of the city, Riverdale will feel like a different planet.
The streets are wider than typical Brooklyn or South Bronx residential blocks. Traffic is lighter. Pedestrian density is low compared to Flatbush or Flushing. These conditions create a more forgiving testing environment where you have more time to think, more room for minor errors, and less sensory overload competing for your attention.
The one challenge: hills
Riverdale has something most NYC test sites don’t: significant hills. The neighborhood sits on elevated terrain overlooking the Hudson, and some streets have noticeable inclines. For students who’ve only practiced on flat ground, hills introduce two skills you may not have rehearsed: starting from a stop on an uphill grade (without rolling backward into the car behind you) and maintaining speed control on downhill stretches (without accelerating unintentionally).
The hill start is the critical one. When you’re stopped at a stop sign on an incline and you release the brake to move to the gas, there’s a brief moment where the car can roll backward. The fix: practice the brake-to-gas transition on hills until you can do it smoothly with minimal rollback. Some instructors teach the parking brake technique (engage the parking brake while stopped on a hill, then release it as you apply gas), but this requires practice to avoid stalling.
Who should test at Riverdale
If you live in Riverdale, Fieldston, Kingsbridge, or anywhere in the northwest Bronx, this is your natural test site. If you’re coming from another borough specifically for the calmer conditions, the same rule applies as always: practice there first. The lower traffic density only helps if the roads feel familiar. A student who’s practiced extensively in Riverdale will benefit from both the calm conditions and the familiarity. A student who shows up cold from Brooklyn will still face unfamiliar streets — and those hills.
