Preparation for a New York auto road test.
Check your confirmation and any DMV closure notices before leaving. DMV asks applicants to arrive no more than 15 minutes before the scheduled test.
Observe traffic around the car and check blind spots before changing direction. Signal in time and make each maneuver only when it is safe.
Practice with a qualified supervising driver in permitted areas. NYS DMV prohibits practice driving at its road-test sites.
Bring your physical photo permit, required course proof and any required corrective lenses. Drivers under 18 need MV-262. Arrange a qualified accompanying driver and a properly registered, insured and inspected car.
Make complete stops where required. Follow posted limits, adjust speed to conditions and brake smoothly while maintaining a safe distance.
Stay focused on safe driving throughout the test. Ask for clarification if you do not understand an instruction. Unsafe driving can cause a failure regardless of other performance.
