Beverly Road sits in the Flatbush/East Flatbush area of Brooklyn — a residential neighborhood with its own set of test-day challenges.
The Beverly Road test site serves the Flatbush and East Flatbush communities, two of Brooklyn’s most densely populated residential neighborhoods. The area is primarily a grid of residential blocks with standard 25 mph speed limits, cars parked on both sides of every street, and a mix of stop signs and traffic lights controlling the intersections. It’s classic Brooklyn residential driving — the same general conditions you’ll find at Seaview or Havemeyer, but with some Flatbush-specific characteristics.
What makes Beverly Road different
School zones: The Flatbush/East Flatbush area has a high concentration of schools. If your test falls during school hours, you may encounter multiple school zones along the route, each with a reduced 20 mph speed limit when the signs are flashing. The density of schools means you could transition in and out of school zones multiple times in a single test. Watch for the signs — missing a school zone speed reduction is both a deduction and, in real life, a significant safety issue.
Pedestrian density: Flatbush is one of the most pedestrian-active neighborhoods in Brooklyn. The sidewalks are busy, crosswalks are frequently used, and mid-block crossings are common. The examiner will be watching your pedestrian awareness constantly. Before every turn, scan the crosswalk. Before proceeding through every intersection, check for pedestrians — even on a green light.
Bus routes: Multiple MTA bus routes run through Flatbush. Expect to encounter stopped buses on the test route. When a bus signals it’s pulling out, yield. When passing a stopped bus, execute a proper lane change: mirror, signal, mirror, shoulder check, move.
Preparation strategy
If you’ve been practicing in Flatbush, Midwood, or East Flatbush, the Beverly Road test will feel familiar. The driving conditions are consistent across these neighborhoods. If you’ve been practicing elsewhere in Brooklyn — Bay Ridge, for example — schedule at least your last 2–3 lessons in the Flatbush area to acclimate to the pedestrian density and school zone frequency.
Morning test appointments (before 10 AM) may coincide with school drop-off traffic. Mid-morning slots (10 AM–12 PM) are often calmer. Afternoon appointments bring school dismissal traffic starting around 2:30 PM. If you have scheduling flexibility, the mid-morning window is typically the lightest traffic.
